Frequently asked questions
Here are some commonly asked questions that are asked to us with their answers. If you question is not here please call email us and we'll get you an answer.
Q
Which is cheaper Timber, Steel or Aluminium?
A
Colorbond Steel is the cheapest substrate for a flat panel durable sign, for temporary signs Coreflute is the cheapest. See our sign materials pages for more information.
Q
Is paint better than stick-on vinyl signs?
A
Paint starts to fade and chalk-up in two to three years; traditional signwriting vinyl lasts seven years before they start to peel. Vinyl is available in brighter colours and special effects, plus it is cheaper than paint.
Q
Will the Vinyl peel off?
A
Under normal conditions signwriting vinyl will last seven years, abnormal heat or exposure to solvents will shorten its life. For some reason people seem to accept paint fading but consider vinyl peeling a failing. Instead try considering peeling in the same way as fading or chalking, just the natural end of the product’s life.
Q
Will the digital prints fade?
A
Of course nothing lasts forever, paint starts to fade and chalk-up in two to three years, traditional signwriting vinyls last seven years before they start to peel, digital prints last three to five years depending on the sun exposure they receive. Printed on traditional signwriting vinyls digital prints will stay up for seven years but the quality of the print will start to fade after three to five years. Given that you should be updating your signage every three to five years to maintain a fresh image for your business, the life of digital prints is adequate for most applications.
Q
Do I need council approval for my signs?
A
Yes, the rules governing signs vary from council to council. Our links page has links that will take you to the relevant regulations for your council, if you want assistance we can help.
Q
How long does it take to make a sign?
A
Naturally that depends on the complexity of the sign, but we finish most signs within ten days of your approval of the final design.
Q
Which is better neon or LED?
A
LED is the way of the future in signs, but for next few years neon will remain far cheaper, brighter, more useful and adaptable.
Q
Do illuminated signs need special flourescent tubes?
A
Yes they do, you can use ordinary domestic tubes but the results can be patchy and the overall illumination will be less. We always use 5000K Triphosphor tubes.
